BBF Grant Supports Otolaryngology Training Initiative in Peru

BBF has provided a grant to the Eye & Ear Foundation to support a medical education mission at Hospital Arzobispo Loayza in Lima, Peru. The grant supports the work of Drs. Jose Zevallos and Gregory Basura of the University of Pittsburgh as they help expand otolaryngology–head and neck surgery capacity in the region through hands-on training and collaboration with local medical teams.

The effort is part of an ongoing collaboration between BBF, the Eye & Ear Foundation, and the University of Pittsburgh to improve patient care and surgical training in Peru. Dr. Zevallos, who was born in Lima, previously told BBF that a major challenge is training that reflects the realities of delivering care in low-resource settings “Not only does this lack of resources limit care that can be delivered today, but it also hampers the ability to train future otolaryngologists as well,” he said. As part of the initiative, BBF has already shipped specialized surgical instruments to support hospital teams in Lima. Additional components include virtual education programs for medical residents, hands-on training in Peru, and future opportunities for Peruvian doctors to gain experience in Pittsburgh. The long-term goal is to build a sustainable exchange that strengthens care for patients while expanding global training opportunities for physicians.
