Supporting Farmers and Communities: BBF’s Grant to ASAP

BBF has provided a grant to Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project (ASAP) to support their ongoing recovery efforts for farms and communities impacted by Hurricane Helene. With over two decades of experience and a network of 850 Appalachian farms, ASAP was uniquely positioned to respond quickly and effectively in the aftermath of the storm.

Within three weeks of Helene, ASAP connected with more than 100 farms and 25 farmers’ markets in the region, providing Immediate Needs Grants and guiding farmers through available programs and support systems. These efforts helped farmers navigate critical first steps toward recovery. As one farmer shared, “ASAP offered clear steps of where to start and knowledgeable and supportive staff that helped address my specific needs.”

BBF’s grant will support ASAP’s responsive programming, including individualized assistance to farmers and dual benefit initiatives that address food insecurity while supporting farm income. Programs such as Farm Fresh for Health, including Double SNAP and Produce Prescription, provide neighbors receiving SNAP benefits or Medicaid with access to fresh fruits and vegetables from local farmers. These programs serve 23 counties in Western North Carolina, helping farmers’ markets remain vital sales outlets for small family farms.

ASAP’s Growing Minds farm-to-school program further bridges the gap between farms and communities. By matching schools and childcare programs with local farms, the program supports local purchasing for meals and snacks, ensuring fresh, healthy foods reach children while creating market opportunities for farmers.

“Support from Brother’s Brothers will fill an important gap in covering the time and care required to continue these core dual benefit programs. This will be key in helping impacted farms and communities move towards stabilization for short and long term recovery.”
