Strengthening Patient Care in Haiti

Laboratory and Equipment Support from BBF

In 2024, Brother’s Brother Foundation (BBF) supported Hôpital Albert Schweitzer Haiti (HAS) with a shipment of medical equipment to help meet ongoing clinical needs. The container included 25 manual hospital beds, crutches, canes, wheelchairs, and exam tables, all of which were integrated into patient care at the hospital. This shipment followed an earlier grant from BBF that enabled HAS to purchase a chemical analyzer for its laboratory. Together, the grant and shipment addressed both diagnostic and equipment needs at a time when supply chains and access to medical resources remained unpredictable.

Hôpital Albert Schweitzer Haiti (HAS) continues to serve as a vital healthcare provider in the Artibonite region, offering life-saving care to thousands of patients amid increasingly difficult conditions. In 2024, the hospital operated under extreme pressure due to the deteriorating security situation in Haiti. Growing gang violence, political instability, and widespread economic hardship have disrupted healthcare across the country. For HAS, dangerous road conditions have limited patient access and delayed the arrival of medical supplies, while the suspension of flights from the U.S. further strained the hospital’s supply chain. Despite these challenges, HAS remains committed to delivering essential medical care to the communities it serves.

The hospital shared the following update on how the equipment and grant-supported analyzer have impacted its operations:

Brother’s Brother Foundation has been an invaluable partner in supporting our mission. Your recent donations, including a chemical analyzer and medical beds, have had a transformative impact on our operations and patient outcomes.

The chemical analyzer donated by Brother’s Brother Foundation has been instrumental in improving diagnostic efficiency at HAS. Prior to its arrival, our laboratory faced long delays in processing critical tests, sometimes leading to life- threatening situations where doctors had to make decisions without full diagnostic clarity. Now, the ability to conduct rapid and precise biochemical analyses has significantly reduced turnaround time, allowing for quicker treatment decisions, better patient management, and improved survival rates. In 2024 the HAS in-house lab team ran a total of 90,631 lab tests with the help of the chemical analyzer provided by Brother’s Brother. This equipment has strengthened our hospital’s ability to deliver high-quality care in a resource-limited setting.

The medical beds provided by Brother’s Brother Foundation have also had a profound impact on our ability to care for patients with dignity and comfort. Before their arrival, HAS faced a shortage of functional hospital beds, and also some challenges with mechanical hospital beds. With the addition of these new manual beds, our facility has been able to accommodate more patients in a safer and more sanitary environment, improving both recovery conditions and overall hospital efficiency. The new medical beds have particularly benefited our malnutrition ward as seen in the photo above, where comfort plays a crucial role in treatment of our pediatric malnutrition patients.

On behalf of the entire HAS team and the countless patients who have benefited from your support, we extend our deepest gratitude to Brother’s Brother Foundation. Your donations have made a tangible difference in our ability to provide high-quality medical care despite the hardships we face. We look forward to continuing our partnership and working together to build a healthier, more resilient future for Haiti.
